The Columbia, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties – Boone and Howard – in central Missouri, anchored by the city of Columbia. As of 2007 the area had a population of 162,314. Columbia (pronounced /k?'l?mbi?/) is the fifth-largest city in the U.S. state of Missouri and the largest city in Mid-Missouri.[8] With an estimated population of 99,174 in 2007,[9] it is the principal municipality of the Columbia Metropolitan Area, a region of 162,314 residents.[10] The city serves as the county seat of Boone County and as the location of the University of Missouri. The college town is politically liberal[11] and known by the nicknames "The Athens of Missouri,"[12] "College Town USA,"[13] and "CoMo."[14] Over half of Columbians possesses a bachelor's degree[15] and over a quarter hold graduate degrees,[16] making it the twelfth most highly educated municipality in the United States.
