The Joplin Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties – Jasper and Newton – in southwest Missouri, anchored by the city of Joplin. As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 157,322 (though a July 1, 2007 estimate placed the population at 171,278). Joplin is a city in southern Jasper County and northern Newton County in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Missouri. Joplin is the largest city in Jasper County, though it is not the county seat. In 2006, the population was estimated at 47,994[3] and the surrounding Metropolitan Statistical Area had an estimated population of 166,178.[4] Although often believed to be named for ragtime composer Scott Joplin who lived in Sedalia, Missouri, Joplin is actually named for Reverend Harris Joplin, the founder of the area's first Methodist congregation.
