The Columbia, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties – Boone and Howard – in central Missouri, anchored by the city of Columbia. The college town is politically liberal[11] and known by the nicknames "The Athens of Missouri,"[12] "College Town USA,"[13] and "CoMo."[14] Over half of Columbians possesses a bachelor's degree[15] and over a quarter hold graduate degrees,[16] making it the twelfth most highly educated municipality in the United States.
